Tools for Assessment

This is a collection of tools I use for assessment. I’ve tried to include when why and how these tools can be used in a classroom context. This is not an extensive list, however it is a list of tools I use regularly.

Forms

Purpose: Whether you use Google or Microsoft the Forms option can provide you with a powerful reusable tool to gather data about your students’ learning.

Cost: No

Type: Formative, diagnostic or summative

Security: if you are using these tools within an education account they meet the Australian Privacy Principles.

Mode: Online, blended, synchronous, asynchronous

Kahoot!

Purpose: Get students engaged in learning through quick fun quizzes.

Cost: Depends on the features you want access to.

Type: Formative

Security: Ask students to use initials and you are ok. Data is stored offshore.

Mode: Online, blended, synchronous, asynchronous (in paid version only)

Plickers

Purpose: Plickers is a tool that can be used in situations where students do not all have a device to submit responses. The teacher is the one who requires a device with the Plickers app, while the students require a printed card. Teachers create their questions and share the possible response (A, B, C, D or True/False). Students hold their card up to show their response then the teacher uses their device to scan the room with the cards. The device will pick up the responses and collect data. Teachers can use this data to evaluate student learning.

Cost: No

Type: Formative

Security: Avoid using student full names.

Mode: Blended, synchronous, asynchronous

Flipgrid

Purpose: To enable students to provide verbal or video feedback about a topic. A teacher creates a grid based on a question and provides students with a link or QR code for responses.

Cost: Free with Microsoft Education accounts

Type: Formative

Security: Using Microsoft education accounts provides security.

Mode: Online, blended, synchronous, asynchronous

Poll Everywhere

Purpose: Poll Everywhere is a tool that can be used for a variety of purposes. the free version allows you a variety of types of responses, however limited numbers. In most classroom sizes it will work, however for a small upgrade fee you can use a whole lot more features and number of responses. I’ve paid for it because it is really useful!

Cost: Free version available for up to 40 responses. Look for the K-12 option.

Type: Formative

Security: Avoid using student full names.

Mode: Blended, synchronous,
